How To Save Money Vaping After Changes To Tax In 2025
It looks like vapers in Canada are about to face some significant price increases. The Harmonized Excise Tax (HET) is doubling the excise tax rates in several provinces, which will directly affect the prices of e-liquids and disposable vapes. This tax is being phased in over time, with some provinces already seeing higher prices, while others will experience price hikes in early 2025. As stock runs out of Federally Stamped products, they will be replaced with Alberta Stamped products at the increased rate.
This tax is paid at the manufacturer/ importer level and then passed on to the retailer so you won’t see a separate tax on your receipt at checkout. Retailers will be able to sell their inventory of unstamped products until March 31, 2025. However since the manufacturers have to start paying tax and stamping products as of January 1, 2025 retailers will have to start increasing their prices to cover the tax when they replenish sold out inventory. To save money it is wise to stock up on your favourite products now.
Here’s the breakdown:
Key Dates:
- July 1, 2024: Quebec, Ontario, Nunavut, and Northwest Territories already implemented the new HET.
- January 1, 2025: Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Yukon will adopt the new HET.
Excise Tax by Volume (Effective January 1, 2025 for AB, MB, NB, PEI, YU)
- 30ml E-liquid: $7.84 → $15.68
- 60ml E-liquid: $11.20 → $22.40
- 120ml E-liquid: $17.92 → $35.84
- 20ml Disposable Vape: $6.72 → $13.44
- 3 pack of 2ml pods: $3.36 → $6.72
What does this mean for you?
- 30ml E-liquid will increase in price by: $7.84
- 60ml E-liquid will increase in price by: $11.20
- 120ml E-liquid will increase in price by: $17.92
- 20ml Disposable Vape will increase in price by: $6.72
- 3 pack of 2ml pods will increase in price by: $3.36
For the provinces where the tax is already in effect, customers are already experiencing these increased costs, while those in the remaining provinces will feel the impact soon. The price hikes are significant, so vapers will likely notice the difference at checkout.
What do you think about these changes? Will this affect how often you vape?
Vape Cheaper:
If you already vape you likely already know that vaping is much cheaper than cigarettes. Therefore returning to cigarettes will not save you money and may cost you health wise.
As you can see the tax decreases per mL as the amount of liquid increases, so you may consider switching from disposables to refillable pods or tank systems.
